Graphic Designer – Brigham Young University

Job Summary
This position is responsible for creating and supervising the production of commercial quality print and digital deliverables for BYU Creative Marketing and ultimately for campus departments and organizations. This position directs the creative and technical production of student designers, writers, and production staff. The resource in this position also personally produces and maintains design and production files. This individual should be highly organized and detail-oriented with a strong background in design and design processes. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to designing projects for web, print, and both digital and physical media.

Essential Functions

Design (60%)

  • Develop artistically creative designs in accordance with each client’s request as assigned by the Department Manager
  • Ensure timely project completion within budget parameters
  • Maintain awareness of new techniques and innovations in graphic design and multimedia

Client Interaction (15%)

  • Develop solutions to meet customer needs
  • Provide legendary customer service
  • Answer questions
  • Troubleshoot technical problems
  • Build relationships of trust and value

Student Employee Supervision/Direction (5%)

  • Training
  • Creative & technical direction of student work
  • Turnover & succession planning

Administration (5%)

  • Attend weekly production meetings
  • Meet with clients and develop solutions to meet customer needs
  • Prepare estimates for every project request
  • Diligently track projects and billable hours in the project management system
  • Support the Creative Supervisor in coordination of work assigned to several student designers
  • University meetings & community events

New Learning and Technology (15%)

  • Explore design trends and new media
  • Work continually to improve skills
  • Stay abreast of innovative design trends
  • Stay current with all related software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Dreamweaver, and others as appropriate
  • Workshops, conferences, association meeting
  • Referring to award winning web sites for inspiration
  • Video tutorials, web tutorials, magazine articles

Education/Experience

Minimum education/experience

Required:

  • Associate’s degree in graphic design or related field, plus 2–3 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Extensive experience in layout design and long-format projects
  • Experience executing design concepts across a range of marketing media and platforms
  • Experience working with and supporting established brands and style guides
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to think creatively and work collaboratively
  • Ability to design for print, web, social media, and retail displays
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment

Preferred:

  • Professional experience in a traditional or in-house marketing, branding, or advertising agency
  • Experience with consumer product marketing
  • Experience with web UI/UX design
  • Product development for retail sale
  • Digital media, photography, drawing, creative writing, or other creative skills
